The United States captured its eighth consecutive Olympic title in women’s basketball, defeating hosts France 67-66 in Paris on the final day of the Games.
The Americans led 67-64 with 3.9 seconds left after Kahleah Copper hit two free throws.
Marine Johannes fed the ball to Gabby Williams, who caught it just inside the three-point line and slotted it over the outstretched arms of Breanna Srewart, securing the final margin.
There was a brief delay before the officials signaled that it was a two-point shot, which prompted celebrations and many joyful hugs for the Americans, leaving the French players in disbelief when the shot fell just short.

The United States trailed China by just one gold medal before the final, but knew a win would move them into the lead because they had more silver medals (44 to 27).
They also topped the list in terms of overall medals won (126), ahead of China (91) and Team GB (65). France finished with 64 medals at home.
