Google Discontinues Chromecast Line

Google has stopped producing Chromecast. In a post Tuesday, Google said it is “ending Chromecast” after more than a decade of selling streaming dongles.

While Chromecast devices will now be available “while supplies last,” Google says it will continue to push software and security updates to its newer devices, without specifying which ones. The most recent update to the lineup was the Chromecast with Google TV released in 2022.

But now, Google says that “the technology has evolved significantly” since the original Chromecast launched in 2013. “We’ve invested heavily in bringing Google Cast technology to millions of TV devices, including Android TV,” Google writes. “We’re taking the next step in evolving how TV streaming devices can add even more functionality to your smart TV, built on the same Chromecast technology.”

In place of the Chromecast, the company will offer the new $99.99 Google TV Streamer, which launches on September 24. The set-top box features some significant spec improvements over the Chromecast with Google TV, like a 22 percent faster processor, along with Thread and Matter integration.

While the Google TV Streamer is a major upgrade from the Chromecast, and could finally rival the pricier Apple TV 4K, it’s a shame that Google is getting rid of its dongle. Priced at just $29.99, the Chromecast with Google TV offers entry-level access to an all-in-one streaming hub.
