Our skin naturally maintains a slightly acidic pH between 4 and 6, while clay masks generally have an alkaline pH above 7. This alkalinity helps balance the acidity of the skin, aiding in the removal of pore-clogging oils and providing a temporary tightening effect on the skin.

2. French Green Clay

It is useful for soothing allergies, sunburns, insect bites and wounds due to its anti-inflammatory properties. This clay, which has a pH of 7.75, also acts as an exfoliant, promoting better blood circulation.

3. Kaolin clay

The pH of this clay is 5.5, but even though it is close to the natural pH of our skin, it is able to draw out impurities from the pores. The clay, which has mild astringent properties, can be beneficial for people with oily skin and acne-prone skin types.

When red clay hardens, it forms a film that can help your skin retain moisture, according to a 2016 study published in Revista de Ciências Farmacêutica Básica e Aplicadas. If you have dry skin, only use it once a week, as clay masks can dry out your skin.

However, frequent application of a clay mask can cause dryness, irritation, or excessive stripping of the skin’s natural oils, the expert says. It’s generally recommended to apply a clay mask 1 to 2 times a week, depending on your specific skin type. If you have sensitive or dry skin, you may choose to use a clay mask less often, such as once a week.

How to use clay masks?

To effectively use a clay mask, some fundamental steps are necessary:

  • Before applying the clay mask, use a gentle cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt or oil residue.
  • Use clean fingertips or a specific brush to apply the clay mask to the face, avoiding the delicate area around the eyes and lips.
  • Most clay masks take about 10-15 minutes to dry and work effectively. As the mask dries, you may feel a tight feeling on your skin. This is normal and indicates that the clay is absorbing excess oil and impurities.
