House of the Dragon star Tom Glynn-Carney touches on the history of King Aegon II Targaryen in season 3. Despite ascending to the Iron Throne in season 1, season 2 proved to be a cruel twist of fate for Aegon, as his young son was murdered and Aegon was burned beyond recognition at the hands of his brother, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), and his dragon Vhagar during the Battle of Rook’s Rest. In addition to Aegon’s severe physical injuries that left him bedridden while Aemond ruled in his stead, the House of the Dragon The season two finale confirmed that Aegon’s dragon, Sunfyre, was also dead.
In an interview with The wrapperGlynn-Carney discussed these tragic events and their traumatic effect on Aegon in season 2. As for Aegon’s future, Hepreviewed what to expect in season three after seeing Aegon leave King’s Landing with Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) in the finale. I think for a while he was a shell of himself, but I think now, as we see him in episode 8, we see him as pretty cold and focused. There’s a fire in his eyes that I’ve never seen before and that will carry us into season 3. This new cold and focused version of the man who wants revenge.

Aegon’s fate at the Battle of Rook’s Rest left him as an afterthought. to most of his enemies and allies. Aemond has become the face of the crown and the Greens, and the one to be feared now that he sits on the Iron Throne, as well as controlling the largest and most formidable dragon in the world. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) is focused on countering Aemond, as are her fellow dragonriders and advisors, while Aemond’s forces fear his reprisal if they fail to follow his orders.
