The big picture

  • Jinger Duggar has revealed a traumatic horse riding accident that occurred during her time
    19 kids and counting
    .
  • The Duggar family’s strict upbringing under the guidance of Jim Bob Duggar and the controversial Institute of Basic Life Principles.
  • The scandal involving Bill Gothard and Josh Duggar led to the cancellation of the family’s reality shows.

The Duggars were a cultural phenomenon in the early days of their TLC reality show19 kids and countingThe family became famous on the net as a strictly conservative Christian family under the umbrella of the father’s authority, Jim Bob Duggarwho followed the fundamentalist beliefs of a sect known as Institute of the Fundamentals of LifeIn his book, Becoming truly freeDaughter Jinger Duggar wrote about her experiences growing up with the controversial principles promoted by the cult, saying that now, as an adult, she realizes that some of what she was taught was “harmful and false,” concluding: “I knew I had to speak out publicly because I was promoting teachings that I now believe are harmful.”

The church has come under fire for the shocking abuse of power shown by Bill Gothardthe founder, when several women came forward to accuse him of sexual abuse. While the lawsuit was eventually dismissed and the church’s investigation found his behavior “inappropriate” rather than illegal, in her book Jinger compared the church leader to her brother, Josh Duggarwho is currently serving a prison sentence on child pornography charges. The scandal that emerged following Josh’s confession that he forcibly touched underage girls, including his younger sisters, Jill Duggar and Jessa Duggar, was a significant factor in the cancellation of 19 kids and counting and the spin-off series Counting on.

Jinger recently opened up about an experience she had while filming the pilot of 19 kids and counting in a YouTube video she posted on Wednesday, August 7, from a series in which she talks about her experience with reality TV, titled Growing up watching TVIn the video, Jinger and her husband, Jeremy Vuolo, talked about what was the “wildest” thing they could remember happening to them during filming. She described a time when her parents took her to a ranch in a New Mexico town called Truth or Consequences, and the excitement all her brothers felt at the idea of riding horses for several days during their stay at the ranch. But Jinger was not prepared for what happened one day during a ride.

She described how she was put on a horse named Samson, and told that he was calm and would go slowly. However, the horse apparently had an aversion to water, because when they came across a wide stream, Jinger’s horse suddenly lunged across the stream and began kicking wildly on the other side. Jinger described how the incident shook her, and then the conversation turned to her deep fear of heights. Jeremy wondered how the show could have neglected to use dramatic footage in the show, and Jinger joked that maybe they refrained from using the footage “because I was, like, traumatized” and the producers were “trying to be nice.” Although she later noted that footage of a terrified child on a wild ride would usually make for great reality TV, perhaps her husband’s observation that she could have been seriously injured in the accident had more to do with the network’s decision not to air the footage they had captured.
