ChargePoint has a new plug system for its charging stations that will make it easier for EV drivers to select the right connector for their EV. The new plug, called Omni Port, works by automatically installing an adapter (or removing one) on the tip of the connector when you’re ready to charge, meaning Tesla owners won’t have to pull out their adapter.
In a press release, ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer says the Omni Port solves “challenges associated with a multi-connector environment” and offers Tesla and non-Tesla drivers a “world-class” experience. As North American automakers transition to the new Tesla connector-based NACS standard, current drivers will still need access to J1772 Level 2 ports and CCS1 ports for DC fast charging. Yes, charging is a mess.
The Omni Ports will ship later this year and will be included with new station hardware, including those with support for 800-volt charging. In the meantime, owners of ChargePoint’s CP6000 and Express Plus Power Link 2000 commercial stations can get an Omni Port retrofit, thanks to a modular design. Don’t expect them to include the nearly extinct CHAdeMO port, though (though there may still be hope for Leaf owners).
