Graeme McDowell fined and suspended by LIV Golf for anti-doping violation | Golf News

Graeme McDowell has been suspended from a LIV golf tournament for violating the Saudi-funded tour’s anti-doping policy.

The former US Open champion was also fined $125,000 (£98,000) for using a decongestant containing the banned substance R-methamphetamine (levomethamphetamine).

McDowell and his LIV Golf Nashville team’s results will also be disqualified. The Northern Irishman will miss this week’s event in West Virginia and will be eligible to return to compete in Chicago next month.

In a statement on social media, McDowell wrote, “Prior to LIV Nashville, I suffered from severe congestion that prevented me from sleeping.

“In an attempt to manage it, I used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant, unaware that it might be on the banned drug list.

“As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the possibility of applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

“Unfortunately, I did not think to do so due to the nature of the over-the-counter drug and I deeply regret the oversight. I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.

“LIV’s anti-doping policy is designed to be comprehensive and transparent. Unlike other tours, LIV enforces these rules rigorously, which made this particularly challenging for me.

“However, I respect the need for these rules and sanctions: they are essential to preserve the integrity of the sport.

“I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve performed. Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I can’t wait to see everyone at LIV Chicago.”

This week, McDowell’s spot in the Smash GC will be filled by an unidentified reserve player.

Vscek+ has officially launched and will be integrated into Sky TV, the NOW streaming service and the Vscek app, giving Vscek customers access to over 50 percent more live sport this year at no extra cost. Find out more here.
