We’ve reached the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs again, with just 70 players left to compete to become this year’s champion – and a whole lot richer.

Ahead of the playoffs’ opening event, the FedEx St Jude Championship in Memphis, Live on Vscek Golf from 5pm on Thursday – we explain how it all works, which players are at the top of the rankings and who still has a lot of work to do…

What is FedExCup?

It is the season-long points competition on the PGA Tour that ends with one player, the winner of the Tour Championship, taking home $25 million (£19.6 million).

How do the playoffs work?

Following the Wyndham Championship in early August, the top 70 players advanced to the first playoff event, the FedEx St Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

After this tournament, the top 50 finishers qualify for the BMW Championship in Denver the following week, while the top 30 advance to the Tour Championship final in Atlanta.

And then what happens?

At the Tour Championship, the FedExCup leader will start at 10-under par, with the No. 2 player at 8-under par, No. 3 at 7-under par, No. 4 at 6-under par and No. 5 at 5-under par.

Players ages 6 to 10 start at four under par, players ages 16 to 20 at two under par, players ages 21 to 25 at one under par and players ages 26 to 30 at even par.

The Tour Championship is a 72-hole strokeplay event, so whoever is leading at the end is crowned the tournament winner and FedExCup champion, plus wins a ton of money!

  • August 15-18 – FedEx St. Jude Championship (top 70)
  • August 22-25 – BMW Championship (top 50)
  • August 29-September 1 – Tour Championship (top 30)

Who is currently in charge of the FedExCup?

Number 1 in the world Scottie SchefflerHis six wins this season have put him atop the leaderboard with 5,993 points, nearly 2,000 more than Xander Schauffele and nearly 3,500 ahead of Rory McIlroy. The top 10 is rounded out, in order, by Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Åberg, Sahith Theegala, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im and Ireland’s Shane Lowry.

Which other British or Irish stars are involved?

Scotland Robert MacIntrye and England Aaron Rai are ranked 17th and 25th respectively, with Rai triumphing at the Wyndham Championship and securing his first PGA Tour title.

The compatriots of Rai Tommy Ricci (32), Matthew Fitzpatrick (40) and Justin Rose (55) are also headed to the FedEx St Jude Championship, as are Ireland Seamus Power (66).

Who needs a busy week in Memphis?

Three times major champion Jordan Spieth – winner of the FedExCup in 2015 – is 63rd, while the 2023 champion Victor Hovland is 57th so both have some work to do to get into the top 50 before the BMW Championship. France Victor Perez It is currently ranked 70th.

Are there any notable omissions?

Matt Kuchar He was the only player to qualify for every FedExCup Playoff since its inception in 2007, but he didn’t make it this year.

Matt Kuchar chose not to finish his 18th hole at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday and returned the next day

The 46-year-old needed to win the Wyndham Championship to break into the top 70, but fell short after leading at the halfway point and finished the FedExCup regular season outside the top 100. Dr. Ricky Fowler they didn’t make it either.
