Olympics 2024: Australian Olympic chief defends breakdancer Raygun from ‘disappointing’ attacks
Ray gun he is freeing himself from criticism.
Named after the Australian breakdancer (real name: Rachel Gunn) has raised eyebrows with her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but she has fended off the hate.
“I could never beat these girls at what they do best: their power moves,” Gunn explained during an Aug. 10 press conference, according to ESPN. “What I bring is creativity.”
Raygun’s performance on August 9 went viral for her unconventional and simple moves, which earned her zero points from the judges. And while breaking is judged on creativity, personality, technique, variety, musicality and vocabulary, many users on social media pointed out the lack of difficulty in Raygun’s routine. However, Gunn maintains her skill.
“All my moves are original,” Gunn added. “Creativity is really important to me. I go out and show my art. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing and it’s art. That’s what it’s all about.”
The 36-year-old is at least familiar with the ins and outs of breaking news, and also lectures at her alma mater, Macquarie University, and, according to her staff profile, is interested in research involving the “cultural politics” of the business.
