In 2019, Netflix gave us the first season of The Umbrella Academya more complex and creative adaptation of Gerardo Streetcomic book series of the same name. Fans and critics immediately fell in love with the story, which centers on seven children with mysterious superpowers and a dysfunctional, traumatized relationship with their father. Sci-fi fans also love The Umbrella Academy plot, which is filled with world-ending apocalypses and confusing time travel paradoxical scenarios. In season 1, the Hargreeves brothers, after years of separation, reluctantly agree to work together as a team to save the world from the end. However, the seven brothers — Luther (Tom’s Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Well (Justin Min), and Viktor (Elliot’s Page) — grew up to be unable to stand each other due to the less than normal upbringing they received from their adoptive father, Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
Up until season 3, our main cast tried their best to fix everything and restore the timeline to its original form, but each time they encountered a different apocalypse. The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy It provided us with the pieces of the puzzle needed to understand everything else that remained of the plot. The Hargreeves brothers discover that the universe has been split into multiple timelines due to a temporal paradoxa moment in time that was never supposed to happen. That moment happens to be the day the substance called “Marigold” is released into their universe by Reginald, which also causes the Hargreeves siblings’ birth mothers to give them an unnatural birth. The release of Marigolds and the birth of the 43 children on Earth causes the main timeline to shatter into multiple timelines, with countless apocalypses occurring across the multiverse. The siblings realize that they cannot stop the world from ending despite being the cause of it in the first place.
Now that the series has concluded, fans online are expressing dissatisfaction with the execution of the fourth season’s plot. Viewers raise questions that weren’t addressed by the Netflix series. Some of these can be considered annoying plot holes, while others have a significant impact and detract from the writing of the Hargreeves brothers’ characters. Here are some of the unanswered questions left after The Umbrella Academy Season 4.

Ben’s Umbrella Academy Season 3 Mid-Credits Scene
At the end of Umbrella Academy Season 3, Sparrow Academy Ben is shown on a South Korean subway train heading to Yeouido Station and next to him is a QR code sticker that takes viewers to a real-life website called “Pogo’s Tattoo Shop”. The scene created a lot of buzz and fans expected it to be part of the upcoming finale. This was confirmed by showrunner, Steve Blackman, who said that the scene was meant to serve as a meaningful teaser for season 4. However, it was not addressed at all in season 4. They never explain the mysterious mid-credits scene in Ben’s third season, and, apparently, has no real connection to the plot. Pogo doesn’t even make an appearance this seasonOver the years, The Umbrella Academy has managed to establish itself as a quality show with a nuanced plot and each scene serving a meaningful purpose. So, the fan disappointment makes sense, that more of this scene was either left out by choice or forgotten.
Why did Ray leave Claire and Allison?
After the reset, Allison finds herself in a house that distorts her reality, where her daughter Claire (
Coconut Assad
) from the first season and her husband, Raymond Chestnut (
Yusuf Gatewood
) from 1963 are present. Allison makes a deal with Reginald to take Ray out of his timeline and into hers, even after he tells Allison that he wants to stay in 1963 to focus on his activist work. This is not addressed in season 4.
Ray is only mentioned once when Klaus casually mentions how Ray abandoned his family
. There’s no mention of why he left and where he went. Allison’s relationship with Ray played a big role in shaping her character, and their confrontation in season 4 would have been significant in exploring her character. The fact that Allison went through a transformation to realize her immoral actions in season 3 could have also been a potential plot point in season 4. It’s a shame that this isn’t addressed in the final season.

The Hargreeves family faces one last apocalypse… and makes a surprising choice.
What happened to Sloane, Luther’s wife?
The Marriage of Luther and Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez) is the highlight of the third season, as it reunites the Hargreeves family for a very brief moment in Hotel Oblivion. After the reset, when the kids arrive in their new timeline, Sloane is not around Luther, and is seen desperately asking Five where his wife is. He said, “I don’t care about any resets, okay? I want my wife back… I have to find my wife.” Luther’s determination to find his wife has viewers anticipating his presence in the final season. However, Sloane is only mentioned twice in the entire season, both times by Luther alone. It is unclear whether Luther tried to look for her and whether she is actually dead. Sloane was among the 43 children born in 1989, so it would make sense for her to exist in the new timeline. But if Sloane did cease to exist after the reset, leaving his death unresolved negatively impacts the writing of Luther’s charactermaking him appear shallow and spineless.
Is Reginald Hargreeves Alive After the Purification?
Originally, after the death of his wife and the destruction of his home planet, Reginald Hargreeves releases Marigold onto Earth in hopes of somehow reviving his wife. But after the reset, It is not addressed whether Reginald will choose to travel to Earth anyway or if he will remain by his dying wife’s side. as his planet collapses. It is not even known if Reginald was the sole survivor of his home planet.
Why was Jennifer inside a squid?
Among the things that have not been explained or resolved, fans of Umbrella Academy remain perplexed as to why Jennifer (Victory Sawal) was discovered inside a giant squid. No backstory is given to Jennifer’s character, making it difficult for the audience to empathize with her. When Five, Lila and Diego read her file in Gean and Jean’s office, it was revealed that she was born in September 1987. This means that he wasn’t even among the 43 superpowered children born to MarigoldHis birth inside a squid makes his existence even more mysterious, and this is a clear plot hole that should have been explored further by the writers of the series.
Origin of the ‘Umbrella Academy’ Interdimensional Spaces
Another unsolved mystery in this series is the origin of Hotel Oblivion, the universe’s reset switch, and the time-traveling subway. All three exist in a dimension outside of all timelines, and their origins are mysteriously left unsolved in the Netflix adaptation. In the comics, Hotel Oblivion is a large hotel tower built by Hargreeves on a distant planet and serves as a prison for some very deadly criminals captured by The Umbrella Academy brothers. However, in the series, Hotel Oblivion serves as a hotel built in a dimension outside the main timeline. Additionally, the machine inside Hotel Oblivion, which we never find out if it was actually built by Reginald, allows him to reset the timeline and also bring his wife, Abigail, back to life.
Similarly, the time-traveling subway was a replacement for the Televator from the comics. In the comics, Reginald invents the Televator, a device that functions like an elevator, allowing users to travel through time, space, and different dimensions. Unlike the time-jumping subway, this invention appears frequently in the comics. The question of “who made the universe’s reset button and the interdimensional subway train” remains a mystery to fans of the series.
The marigold flowers at the end of season 4
Just like the previous season, the season finale of Umbrella Academy has a scene in the end credits where the audience is shown eight marigold flowers blooming under a tree. The marigold flowers in the end credits of season four make viewers wonder if this is another meaningless end credit scene, put there to give fans some comfort. Or if he meant to indicate an open ending that suggested the rebirth of the Hargreeves brothers.
