In what is shaping up to be a particularly mixed weekend at the domestic box office, the latest installment of a long-running franchise should take the top spot at the end of a fantastic summer, while a wide re-release of a cult hit should round out the top five. Disney’s release of 20th Century Studios Alien: Romulus he cashed in a solid $18 million on opening daylike it is headed for a first weekend haul in the $40 million rangeThis is an impressive achievement for the sci-fi film, which represents a sort of reboot (and a return to its origins) for the franchise.
Directed by the horror specialist Faith Alvarez, Alien: Romulusopen to mostly positive reviewsand acts as a standalone “interquel” between Ridley Scottthe first point of reference Alien movies, and 1960-1969, James Cameron, 1969-1970, 1969-the equally appreciated sequel, Aliens. Scott also serves as a producer on the film, which reportedly cost $80 million to make. The legendary director attempted to reboot his franchise more than a decade ago, the divisive Prometheuswhich grossed over $50 million in the United States in its opening weekend. Scott also directed a direct sequel to that film, titled Alien: Pactwhich opened with a gross of $36 million.
Hero Cailee Spaeny, Isabella Merced, David Johnson AND Archie Renaux, Alien: Romulus is currently sitting at an 81% “fresh” score on aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. In its review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime wrote that the film “has a promising beginning and end, but the middle gets a little too muddled with nostalgia for this franchise.” The public response has been solid which bodes well for the film’s future. Alien: Romulus It earned an 87% audience score on RT and earned a B+ CinemaScore from day-of audiences.
Does summer still have room for one last hit?
Second place goes to another Disney-supervised 20th Century Studios release, the backup blockbuster Deadpool and WolverineThe superhero blockbuster grossed more than $8 million on Friday and is expected to generate just under $30 million this weekend. Deadpool and Wolverine surpassed the $500 million mark nationwide a few days ago, and will conclude its fourth weekend with just under $550 million in the bank. Last week’s debutante, Sony’s romantic drama It ends with uswill drop to third place this weekend. Starring Lively BlakeThe film grossed over $7.7 million on Friday and is expected to generate just over $20 million over the weekend. This should bring the current domestic total to just under the coveted $100 million mark.
Fourth place went to Universal’s smash hit The tornadoeswhich continues to draw crowds nationwide despite being released on digital streaming platforms a few days ago. The film is aiming to surpass $8 million this weekend, after grossing over $2.7 million on Friday. That should bring the film’s current domestic total to just under $240 million by Sunday, meaning it’s almost certain to surpass its original Tornadothe national haul of a lifetime in the coming days. The top five was rounded out by the 15th anniversary re-release of the unconventional stop-motion film Enrico Selick‘S Coralinewhich is expected to generate a cool $7 million-plus over the weekend, after generating $2.7 million on Friday. Coraline ended its original 2009 run with nearly $80 million, and if it’s lucky, the animated hit could finally cross the $100 million mark by the end of its re-release.
