Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi released a statement last night expressing her opposition to SB 1047, a California bill that seeks to regulate artificial intelligence.
“Many of us in Congress believe that SB 1047 is well-intentioned but ill-informed,” Pelosi said. She noted that other Bay Area members of Congress, Zoe Lofgren, Anna Eshoo and Ro Khanna, have expressed concerns about the bill, which she described as “more harmful than helpful.”
The bill was recently amended to address concerns from critics, including the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, and is currently headed to the California Assembly for a vote. Because it is a state bill, Pelosi and other members of Congress have no official say in the matter, though Pelosi’s seniority and profile will likely lend weight to her opinion with California politicians.
“AI was born in California,” he said. “We need to have legislation that is a model for the nation and the world. We have the opportunity and responsibility to allow small business and academia, not big tech, to dominate.”
