To be fair, many of Carol Danvers’ relationships within the Marvel Universe are far from drama-free, but her already complicated dynamic with former Captain Marvel Genis-Vell went from bad to worse.

Captain Marvel #10 – written by Alyssa Wong, with art by Ruairi Coleman – officially places Captain Marvel and Genis- at odds with each other, as his predecessor in the role blames Carol for the loss of his last connection to his father, the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell.

The series as a whole has forced a mind-controlled Genis-Vell to clash with Captain Marvel, but just as he returns to reality, he may be planning to get revenge on Carol for what she seemingly cost him.

Genis-Vell made his return to Marvel in Captain Marvel #1, at the beginning of this series. However, his return was unceremonious, as he was attacked by the villain Omen, in her relentless pursuit of the Nega-Bands. After cutting off his hands, she kills him and turns him into her mindless zombie servant. When he disappoints her, he is soon killed again, but revived once Captain Marvel defeats Omen in Captain Marvel #10. Unfortunately he doesn’t have time to celebrate his next chance at life, as he is surprised by the disappearance of the Nega-Bands.

The Nega-Bands, which once belonged to his father and were the last remnants of his father, were sacrificed in the battle with Omen. Not even a reunion with his dear friend Rick Jones is enough to cheer Genis-Vell up. He is not only disappointed, he is enraged by the destruction of the Nega-Bands, feeling betrayed by Captain Marvel, telling her openly that he is not sure he can forgive this offense. He tells his friends, or perhaps former friends, that he needs some space for himself before he literally turns his back on them.


It’s clear that Genis-Vell has no intention of befriending Captain Marvel, but whether he might become her enemy remains an open question.

A potentially heartbreaking threat to Carol Danvers

It’s clear that Genis-Vell is in no mood to be friends with Captain Marvel, but whether he could become her enemy remains an open question. He blames her directly for his loss, and is so devastated that it’s hard to say whether space could repair their newfound friction. He was already something of a nemesis while he was mind-controlled by the Undone and Omen, but Being a villain of his own free will could make Genis even more dangerous. Not only is it powerful, but it gives Captain Marvel A familiar friend to fight with could raise the stakes in the future, influencing the way he fights.
