KIEV (Reuters) – A 4-year-old boy and his 35-year-old father died when debris from a downed Russian weapon fell on their home near the capital Kiev, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.
Among those injured in the attack in the Brovary district of the Kiev region, just northeast of the capital’s metropolitan area, was a 13-year-old boy, Ukrainian emergency services reported on the Telegram messaging app.
In a video released by emergency services, workers can be seen clearing away a pile of construction debris at night, brick by brick, and lifting the body of a child from underneath.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said the house was hit by debris from a drone, but emergency services said it was debris from a missile.
“Russia continues to kill people,” Yermak wrote on Telegram, following the Ukrainian practice of not capitalizing Russia’s name in wartime. “It is necessary to destroy its military infrastructure, because the enemy does not accept any other arguments.”
Reuters could not independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Russia. Kiev and Moscow deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war, which Russia launched in February 2022 and which has killed thousands and displaced millions of Ukrainians.
