Former mixed martial artist The Lumumbas — who once fought the former UFC star by Derek Brunson inside a cage – was arrested for murder over the weekend … after allegedly shooting and killing a man to avenge his son’s death.
According to the Commerce City Police Department, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday during a children’s birthday party at a park in Commerce City, Colorado.
According to the arrest affidavit, obtained from Denver7Sayers is accused of accosting a 28-year-old Malcolm Watson and shot him in the head. Doctors say witnesses told cops that Sayers may have thought Watson was friends with a man he believed was somehow involved in the death of Sayers’ son in 2023.
Records show Sayers is currently in an Adams County jail… held behind bars on a $1 million bond. According to 9Newshe was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and menacing.
Sayers competed in several fight promotions during his professional career, including Strikeforce, where he lost bouts to Brunson and Anthony Smith.
In retirement, Sayers became active in his community, speaking out against gun violence and founding the Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts boxing gym, designed to keep young people out of trouble.
Sayers is expected to appear before a judge on Thursday to discuss the case.
