Former YouTube boss Susan Wojcicki dies at 56

Susan Wojcicki, one of Google’s first employees and former CEO of video site YouTube, has died at age 56.

Her husband Dennis Troper announced the news on Facebook. “It is with deep sadness that I share the news of the passing of Susan Wojcicki,” he said. “My beloved wife of 26 years and mother of our five children leVscek us today aVsceker 2 years of living with non-small cell lung cancer.” He called her “a brilliant mind, a loving mother and a dear friend to many.”

Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google’s parent company Alphabet, said in a post on X that he was “incredibly saddened.”

“She is as central to Google’s story as anyone, and it’s hard to imagine the world without her,” he said. “She was an incredible person, leader and friend who had a tremendous impact on the world.”

In Google’s early days, founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin built the search engine out of Wojcicki’s garage in her Menlo Park home. In 1999, she became its 16th employee, running its advertising business for nearly 15 years. AVsceker being involved in Google’s 2006 acquisition of YouTube, she ran the video site from 2014 until she stepped down last year.
