The Hargreeves siblings’ tumultuous journey ended on a bittersweet note, as they found closure with each other and saved the universe, but at the cost of sacrificing themselves and being erased from all history. While I was talking to People, The Umbrella AcademyThe cast shared their mixed thoughts on the finale. Some cast members felt it was an overall satisfying conclusion despite its darkness, and that it fit the series nicely. Other cast members said they didn’t like all aspects of the ending, while admitting that it made sense to them in the larger context of the story. See their responses below:

by Justin H. Min:
I think it’s a satisfying ending. It’s obviously a darker ending, but I think it’s in line with what our show is. I think it would be a little weird if it was just rainbows and butterflies for the Umbrella Academy.

Elliot’s Page:
“Satisfied” [with the resolution] It’s a little forced in terms of weight and sadness, but in terms of pure plot, I was like, ‘Yeah, that makes sense.’

Emmy Raver Lampman:
I don’t like it, but it makes sense.

“Darkness” Wasn’t The Problem With The Umbrella Academy’s Finale

Narrative issues prevented the ending from working

The premise of a somewhat dark ending makes sense given the development of The Umbrella Academythe most realistic version of the superhero story and an ultimate sacrifice as the only way to finally put an end to all the apocalypses and broken timelines the Hargreeves have caused. The biggest problem with the series finale is that it doesn’t feel earned. Compared to previous seasons, season 4 felt rushed and struggled to balance its various subplots.many of which ultimately proved irrelevant.

While the finale is tonally consistent with the rest of the series, season four’s pacing issues, wasted narrative potential, and unnecessary plots prevent the conclusion from working as intended.

Reducing the number of episodes from the standard ten to just six had a negative impact as it didn’t provide enough time to properly develop its storylines and naturally build to the Hargreeves’ sacrifice. The initial premise of the Hargreeves siblings having to navigate a timeline without their powers was negated after the first episode. Much time was then spent on the arc with Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Quinn (George Tchortov) that felt regressive for Klaus’ development and had little bearing on the finale.

Justin H. Min is right when he says that a purely happy ending would have felt tonally jarring for The Umbrella Academy. While the finale is tonally consistent with the rest of the series, season 4’s pacing issues, wasted narrative potential, and unnecessary plots prevent the conclusion from working as intended. Particularly when compared to the quality of previous seasons, It’s disappointing that The Umbrella AcademyThe ending wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been..
