No active forest fires in Athens area, says fire service

There are no more active fires in the Athens area, but authorities remain on high alert, a spokesman for the Greek fire service said.

He told the BBC that firefighters would continue to clear the land and maintain a strong presence in the area.

Thanks to milder winds and the massive efforts of emergency services, the fires were put out.

But there is still a risk of outbreaks due to gusts of wind and temperatures that well above 30°C (86°F) during the day.

A woman died and dozens of others, including firefighters, were injured after fires burned 100,000 acres (40,470 hectares) of land. Thousands of local residents were evacuated.

The huge cloud of smoke that had been hanging over Athens for hours cleared on Tuesday, but the sky was still hazy.

Greek authorities are now assessing the damage and preparing compensation plans for affected residents and businesses.

More than 700 firefighters, 199 fire engines and 35 water-dropping aircraft were deployed to put out the fires, which broke out on Sunday afternoon about 35 km (22 miles) north of the Greek capital.

By Monday, fires had been confirmed in 40 different locations, with some areas seeing flames reaching heights of 25 metres (82 feet).

Although the fires are largely contained, firefighters continue to put out blazes and maintain a strong presence in the capital region.

Among the most affected areas are the suburbs of Nea Penteli, Vrilissia and Patima Halandriou.

Nea Penteli resident Marina said she was forced to leave her Nea Penteli neighborhood to reach a nearby town, only to be evacuated a second time when the flames reached there as well.

“My friend’s house, he probably lost everything: he has nothing left. And while everything was happening, our school burned down. All our memories were there,” he told the BBC.

In Vrilissia, just 14 km (8 miles) from the centre of Athens, buildings and businesses were destroyed by flames,

The body of a 63-year-old woman was found in a burned-out factory in nearby Patima Halandriou.

Colleagues said she was too scared to jump from the building because the flames were approaching and she was trapped inside.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis interrupted his vacation to return to managing the crisis.

After activating the EU’s Mutual Civil Protection Mechanism, European countries including Italy, France, Serbia, Spain, the Czech Republic and Romania have provided assistance, including aircraft, personnel and aid to Greece.
