‘One Life’ Review: Anthony Hopkins Is Excellent in Powerful Adaptation

The big picture

  • Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn provide excellent portraits of Nicholas Winton at different stages of his life.
  • The film pays tribute to Winton’s colleagues and mother, highlighting their pivotal role in the mission’s success, while keeping the story simple and concrete, letting the more significant details speak for themselves.
  • Thoughtful creative decisions do justice to a story about the importance of protecting the most vulnerable.

“Don’t start what you can’t finish.” In A lifestarring Nicky Winton (the younger version played by Johnny Flynn and an older version performed by Antonio Hopkins, Author at) takes this advice before embarking on her most altruistic mission: saving Jewish children living in precarious conditions before the Nazis took control of Prague, on the eve of World War II. Although this task seemed impossible at the time, Winton would not take no for an answer and her decision led to over 669 children being redirected to foster homes and protected by the British people before the outbreak of war. Based on a true story written by Winton’s daughter, Barbara Winton, It’s a sensitive portrait of a humanitarian hero who has never seen himself that way..

Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn are both excellent as Nicholas Winton

Nicholas Winton is the heart of this project directed by James Hawesand the same goes for the actors who play the character on the big screen. A life presents Hopkins as a modern-day version of Winton, a man who clings to the past and is constantly tormented by the children he failed to save, instead of focusing on the lives he did save. The two-time Oscar winner embraces the quiet, vulnerability and even cheeky aspects of Winton’s personality. as he tries to get rid of all the boxes containing documents from his time as a member of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia. Winton manages to tidy up his office, but still has a scrapbook containing vital information about the children who managed to escape Prague before it was too late. As he tries to find a new home for the scrapbook, ideally somewhere where it will serve an educational purpose rather than gather dust in a library, Winton eventually discovers what happened to many of the children who were affected by his and his team’s mission.

As previously mentioned, Hopkins is excellent in his portrayal of the humanitarian in his later years.but it is important to note the equally impeccable portrayal of the title character by Johnny Flynn at a young age. Although there is a clear physical resemblance between the two actors, their similar mannerisms and screen presence help viewers acclimate to the time jumps from 1938 to 1988 throughout the film. In addition to their portrayal of the title character, the inclusion of props such as visas, family photos, and sets authentic to the time periods depicted in the film helped tell this story in a moving way. It is clear to see how the attention to detail from Hawes and the production team elevated this project, especially when it came to recreating the BBC’s “That’s Life” segment with real people who were affected by Winton’s mission.

The camera movements also allow the film to help the audience distinguish the events from 1938 to 1988.. During the flashbacks to Winton’s younger years, the scenes appear to have been shot with handheld cameras, giving an inside look at the chaos of getting the children out of Prague with the right paperwork and ensuring they would have homes when they landed in England. These scenes clash with the scenes set in 1988 because the shots are often static, showing that Winton’s life has settled down and he is no longer in a rush to save people.

The film’s cast proves that Winton isn’t the only savior in “A Life”

While the film focuses on Winton’s life story, honoring his achievements that went unnoticed for many years, he’s not the only hero hereIf it weren’t for Winton Trevor’s colleagues (Alex Sharp), Doreen Warriner (Romola Gara), and Betty Maxwell (Marthe Keller), the plan would not have left the page. In addition to these key members of the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia, Winton would not have known how to begin making his mission a reality without his mother’s hands on deck. Babette Winton, played phenomenally by Helena Bonham CarterShe is the one who contacts the authorities to find out what documents were required to help the children escape from Prague. She also supports him during the entire process of obtaining all visas and foster families.

Winton later receives help from his friend Martin Blake (Jonathan’s Price) when he tries to find a new home for his album. Although Hopkins and Pryce only have one scene to reunite after their on-screen work in The two popestheir interaction in the film is central to Winton’s journey to reconnect with some of the boys who were rescued before the war. Since A life It’s based on a true story, it can be really easy for the script to be full of drama and Oscar bait, but this film is based on its simplicity. Like Winton himself, the film doesn’t brag about its qualities, but shows them as they are. Director James Hawes doesn’t have to do much to translate the story from page to screen. Having the right casting for each role (especially Winton’s) and being careful to keep props, sets, and people involved in the project who were directly influenced by Winton is enough to make everything here seem to work.

All in all, A life It’s a successful example of how to make a film that works best by keeping things simple. and let the details speak for themselves. Winton was an ordinary man who chose to do something extraordinary for the good of humanity in a historically divisive moment. He and his team made sure to help children not to gain anything, but to protect the vulnerable and have compassion for the less fortunate. The film has the power to make its audience cry because the story is powerful and the thoughtful creative decisions do it justice.
