However, since Joyboy was the first pirate, it is unlikely that his dream was also to become the Pirate King like Luffy. Regardless of what kind of king Joyboy wanted to be, his dream proves that Luffy is not his true successor, as Luffy has stated time and time again that he does not want to be a hero or a king and therefore will not be able to fulfill Joyboy’s dream.

One Piece Teases That Joyboy’s Dream Is Completely Different From Luffy’s

Luffy in march five tells Emet that he will become the pirate king in one piece

The fact that Joyboy also dreamed of becoming a king of some sort seems like another thing he and Luffy have in common at first glance, especially given Luffy’s immediate reaction. However, it is important to note that Becoming the Pirate King is not Luffy’s true dream but only a stepping stone towards the real one, anticipated at the end of Wano.

It also makes no sense that Joyboy would also want to become the Pirate King, as such a title would not have had much meaning during the Void Century when Joyboy was considered the first pirate to ever set sail, which meant that piracy was still uncommon. If that was the case, Joyboy’s dream was definitely something completely different, and based on the many little clues given about Joyboy so far, this dream may have been quite ambitious, such as perhaps wanting to become the king of the world like Rocks D. Xebec.

An ambitious dream like becoming the king of the world would certainly explain why the twenty kingdoms have allied themselves against Joyboy and the Ancient Kingdom, and why Imu’s existence is kept so secret. Joyboy’s cryptic apologies to Fishman Island and the fact that he emulated Nika, the Warrior of Liberation, suggest he probably had good reasons for wanting to become kingas the desire for equality and freedom for all. However, this makes Joyboy a hero who fights for the masses, which Luffy certainly does not want to be.

Luffy won’t be the one to make Joyboy’s dream come true

While he values ambition and freedom as much as he does, Luffy has made it abundantly clear that he does not want to share his flesh with others or become a hero. Throughout A pieceLuffy has only helped those who have helped him, those who are brave enough to ask for his help, or those who are willing to fight for themselves, as seen with Momonosuke. Even though Luffy has awakened the Nika Fruit, he is still blissfully unaware of the existence and purpose of the Sun God Nika, as seen countless times during the Egghead arc.

The most important thing is that Luffy, who didn’t want to be a Marine but a pirate simply for the freedom it offers, also doesn’t want to become a king in any sense of the word. So, even though Luffy ends up fighting the World Government in the Final Saga of A pieceHim He probably won’t become the heroic king Joyboy wanted to be in the end, even if it inadvertently ends up bringing freedom to all who do so. In fact, if Joyboy’s dream was truly to become the king of the world, the Final Saga could see Luffy’s greatest rival, Blackbeard, chasing Joyboy’s dream, albeit with darker and more twisted motivations.

However, this is all just speculation at the moment, as there is still a lot that… A piece has yet to reveal about Joyboy, the Void Century, and Luffy’s true dream, all of which are surely connected by fate. While the pieces of the puzzle are finally falling into place, only time will tell if Luffy is truly destined to be Joyboy’s successor and what exactly that role will entail.

A piece is available on Manga Plus and Viz Media.
