Relax! “Frozen 3” just got a massive update at D23

This article is about a developing story. Stay tuned as we will add more information as it becomes available.

The big picture

  • Fans are eagerly awaiting news about the third Frozen movie; while few plot details have been revealed, we now know that it will be a two-part story.
  • The public was shown concept art of the new sequel.
  • Frozen 4 is officially in the works before Frozen 3.

After official plans for a third installment in the Frozen franchise were announced last year, the news was quiet as snow. The news came during Disney’s first quarter meetings, straight from the mouth of Disney CEO Bob Iger. The news came in tandem with the development of Pixar’s film The history of toys 5AND Zootopia 2 from Disney Animation. There has been no indication of what the plot is for Frozen III it could concern.

If the third film picks up where the second left off, we’ll see Queen Anna leading Arendelle and Elsa living among the spirits of the enchanted forest and the Northuldra. What new conflicts could the Ardenelle sisters face? Could we instead get a prequel, exploring the lives of Anna and Elsa’s parents?

The first two films were huge hits. It was hard to go anywhere in 2013 without hearing little kids singing “Let it Go.” The second film, with the slightly less catchy song “Into the Unknown,” explored the girls’ parents’ origins and Elsa’s powers. When the girls discover that their mother was part of the Northuldra, it helps uncover the secrets of a forest that has literally been shrouded for decades.

If the third film is another sequel, fans would likely see the return of the main cast: Idina Menzel like Elsa, Kristen Bell like Anna, Jonathan Groff like Kristoff, and Georgia Gad like Olaf. We’ll probably also see the return of the enchanted forest spirits representing the five elements, including the adorable fire spirit Bruni.

You can watch the first two Frozen movies on Disney+ in the United States.
