KIEV (Reuters) – Russia fired its third ballistic missile at Kiev in August on Sunday, with preliminary data showing all the air weapons were destroyed on their approach to the city, the Ukrainian capital’s military administration said.
“This is already the third ballistic attack on the capital in August, with exactly six-day intervals between each attack,” Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, said on the Telegram messaging app.
“According to preliminary information, the Russians have most likely used North Korean ballistic missiles for the third time in a row.”
Popko added that Ukrainian air defense units also destroyed several drones launched by Russia.
The scope of the attack was not immediately clear. Popko said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Reuters could not independently verify the type of missiles fired. A Reuters witness heard explosions that sounded like air defense systems early Sunday morning.
About two hours after the initial attack, Kiev, the surrounding region and much of central and northeastern Ukraine were placed under new air strike alerts, with threats of more missiles targeting the city, the Ukrainian Air Force said.
