On August 10, the Court of Arbitration for Sport annulled the investigation that had led to the arrest of Simone’s teammate Jordanian Chillies earning the bronze medal in floor exercise, Jordan’s coach said Cecile Landi did not appeal within the one-minute parameter, instead filing it at one minute and four seconds, leading the International Gymnastics Federation to reinstate the original ranking from the August 5 competition.
(ICYMI: Romania Ana Barbosa was in third position before Cecile successfully appealed Jordan’s routine difficulty, which increased the 27-year-old’s score from 13.666 to 13.766, or just above Ana’s 13.700.)
The decision, which prompted the International Olympic Committee to announce that Jordan’s bronze medal would be annulled and awarded to Ana, 18, prompted widespread protests, including from Jordan’s fellow Team USA gymnasts Simone, Sunny Lee, Hezly Rivera AND Jade Carey as well as Aly RaismanAna herself expressed her opinion on the situation.
However, the matter is not closed yet as USA Gymnastics has appealed the ruling and presented evidence suggesting that Cecile I had spoke to Olympic officials within the allotted minute and did not violate the rules.
