The Sonos ‘Ultimate’ home theater system requires a lot of elbow grease

It was at this point that my very excited husband became much less excited. “He decided to let me handle it.” Fair enough, because it’s my job, but it’s not the attitude you’d expect from someone who had hailed all those boxes as a miracle a few weeks earlier.

Side note: To factory reset a Sonos speaker, you have to unplug the power cord, then hold down the Bluetooth button while reconnecting the power cord, then hold down the Bluetooth button until the light on the front flashes orange and white. I had to do this for each speaker multiple times, and even did it while on the phone with Sonos tech support.

“I have one complaint,” I said. At the time, I was balancing the Sonos sub on my lap at an angle, holding the Bluetooth button on the front of the sub with my left hand while fumbling with my right hand for the plug at the bottom. “I don’t think the factory reset method should be this hard.”

“Ideally, the customer wouldn’t have to do this so often,” he said calmly.

The final straw was when, after weeks of tinkering, everything was up and running. I only had one more thing to test, which is that when you add Sonos Ace headphones to your app, you can enable TV Audio Swap, which means you can listen to the TV audio on your Sonos Ace headphones without disturbing anyone else in the room.

I powered up the Ace (factory reset, of course, because my app couldn’t find the headphones for the first couple of tries). Then I clicked Settings in the app and the Ace headphones. I couldn’t find the option to swap audio. When I double-checked the instructions, I realized, to my horror, that TV Audio Swap only works with the Sonos iOS app.

After weeks of tinkering, I couldn’t bear the thought of having to reset everything to factory settings. Still to repeat the same spiel on my iPhone. Sorry to the people who want to hear about audio swap: I sat down to write this instead.

Sonos speakers work really well. When I finally got the whole bundle up and started playing Sabrina Carpenter in the living room, my 7-year-old immediately ran in and started dancing. If you’re used to tinny TV speakers or sitting a small Bluetooth speaker on the sink while you wash dishes, the room-filling sound of a full home theater system is mind-blowing.

Mad Max: Fury Road It’s one of my all-time favorite movies. I’ve seen it three times in theaters, and testing a home theater system is a convenient excuse to watch it over and over again. I never would have believed how much of an experience the Sonos system could replicate with Dolby Atmos.
