The Tesla Diner Could Actually Be a Reality

In line with Elon Musk’s growing rhetoric about X returning to the good old days, it looks like Tesla is finally getting ready to open its own 1950s-style diner.

According to a job posting on LinkedIn, first spotted by the Drive Tesla Canada blog, Tesla is looking for an Experience Specialist at the Tesla Diner in Los Angeles to work with the Charging Operations team to ensure “an exceptional customer experience at the Tesla Diner.”

The job offer comes three years after Tesla filed three trademarks for its food service brand and seven years after Musk began publicly discussing the idea of a Tesla charging station that would combine with a restaurant.

Tesla posted the job opening two weeks ago on LinkedIn and received 26 applications before the automaker stopped accepting resumes. While the job posting doesn’t provide a timeline for the opening, it does provide other clues about the Tesla Diner. For example, it appears Musk is making good on his promise to include a drive-thru theater.

In 2018, Musk tweeted: “I’m going to put an old-school drive-in, roller skates, and a rock restaurant at one of the new Tesla Supercharger locations in Los Angeles.” He added: “And an outdoor screen playing a film clip of the greatest scenes in movie history.”

Let’s hope this isn’t just Tropic Thunder repeating itself.

The Experience Specialist will manage the drive-in movie program and content changes, as well as a variety of other digital activities. The job description details how the role will work with multiple Tesla teams, including design studio, merchandising, UI, app, sourcing and leadership, as well as external vendors, to manage everything from launching new menus to selling Tesla merchandise.

The Diner will be located at 7001 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, according to PropertyShark data. The property is listed as a one-story restaurant/cocktail lounge/tavern, but videos detailing construction on the site appear to show a two-story building. Construction plans reveal that Tesla plans to operate the restaurant and charging station 24/7, but the two outdoor movie screens will be limited to 7 a.m.-11 p.m. There will be about 30 Tesla Super Charging stations.

Musk described the August 2023 diner as “Grease meets The Jetsons with Superchargers” and said it “should be ready by the end of the year.” The billionaire executive is known for his overly ambitious timelines. Earlier this year, he said Tesla’s robotaxi would be unveiled in August, but pushed that date back to October.
