Lauren Coughlin shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Women’s Scottish Open, with England’s Charley Hull three shots behind.
The American, who earned her first career LPGA Championship victory at the Canadian Women’s Open last month, collected six birdies in her bogey-free round at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire to settle at 12-under par for the tournament.
Coughlin birdied the 18th hole to take a one-shot lead over Megan Khang (69), who had shared the lead at the halfway point with two-time major champion Minjee Lee (72) before day three.
“I’m starting to hit the ball really well and I’m starting to feel really good about myself and my game, and I’m trying to keep that going,” Coughlin said.
Hull is tied for third at nine under, paired with Esther Henseleit, who won the Olympic silver medal for Germany in Paris last week.
Hull made his Olympic debut with a 9-over par 81, his first appearance since a shoulder injury, but played at 8-under par for the rest of the week to find the form he brought back to Scotland.
“I played really well today,” Hull said. “I’m happy with how I played… it was a good, solid day and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Lee is tied for fifth at eight under par, with New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, the Paris gold medal winner, a shot further back.
The Women’s British Open, the final major of the year, takes place next week at St Andrews.
